This spot was shot in HD with the HVX200 and put together using Avid Xpress Pro and Adobe After Effects. The winner in the People's Choice category was "CaveMan" by Bob Chambers. It was shot with the Sony WS790 and created with Avid Media Composer Adrenaline and Digidesign Pro Tools. Rodriguez himself will select the best trailer from all submissions, which are due by February 12th, and play the winner during his "Robert Rodriguez's Grindhouse 101" discussion on Sunday, March 11th. Purty neat. Potential entrants must re-edit a pre-selected hodgepodge of stock film footage from the Prelinger Archives, keeping their short mashups under two minutes without any alternate materials allowed. Submissions must be uploaded to a video sharing website, and entries will be featured on the Stockstock website and later judged by a panel of producers. Best of all, entry to the fest is free, but donations are encouraged. Sounds like this might be a fun little exercise. Anyone interested might want to hurry up, though, because the deadline is February 11th.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

iPod Film Festival 2007

The Flux has just announced their second iPod Film Festival, quite possibly the only fest dedicated to bringing quality short films to the screens of iPod owners around the globe. Festival entries are free thanks to a recent partnership between The Flux and Small Dog Electronics, and categories include Indie, Student, and Kitchen Sink. If you've got a short under ten minutes that is suitable for small screen viewing, this fest might be for you. If you've been hesitating to submit, there is precious little time to continue pondering. SXSW has grown to become a major player in the realm of film festivals, so give it a go if you think you've got the goods. Submission prices are $35 for shorts, and $45 for features. (Which is actually not a horrible deal considering the excellent reputatation of SXSW.) The film segment of the festival will run from March 9th to the 17th of 2007.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Earn some dough with your video on Break.com

Filed under: Web, Marketing, Online, Competitions

Break.com wants some fresh content and they want it bad. But for now I'll just keep reading about other folks experiences. Here's a great story I found that follows filmmaker Phil Warren through his adventure in the Minnesota State University 48-hour Filmmaker Festival. His biggest challenge wasn't coming up with the story and shooting the footage, but dealing with iMovie crashes while in the final few hours of the contest. One comment I chuckled at had him wondering Why, oh why hadn't he learned Final Cut Pro with all the new fancy technology that might have made this process a breeze? Shhhhhh, nobody tell him that this stuff happens with the fancy editors too.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filmmaking guerilla style

Here's a fun article to read. It's about a group of high school kids that were making a film as part of the Northwest Film Projections Guerilla Film Project. The contest is for students ages 15-18, and each team has to write, cast, film and edit a their movie in only 65 hours. The rules required them to include french fries, a can of sardines and the phrase "It's 100 percent vegan" in their movie. Now that's fun stuff. Don't expect any technical mumbo jumbo in this article. It's all about the kids and their experience. After reading the article, I wish I had been on one of the teams.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Avid users, here's a contest for you

Avid is challenging its users to create a commercial on what makes Avid the "professional" choice in editing systems. That's it, just make a commercial for Avid. All entries will be posted on contest partner MovieMaker Magazine's website to be voted on.

There are 2 categories, The People's Choice which will be voted on by the public and The Pro's Choice. I skimmed through the contest rules and regulations and found this concerning The Pro's Choice judging:

These entries will be judged by the Sponsor and an Avid customer, Chris Franklin of Big Sky Editorial in New York City. While the Sponsor will use reasonable efforts to review all entries, it reserves the right to review only the first 1,000 entries submitted.

So you might want to get your entry in early in case there's a stampede. Voting begins December 1, but you can upload your videos until December 31, which is weird. Obviously you should get your entry in by December 1 to maximize your chance of getting those public votes because winners will be announced the first week of January.

The People's choice winner receives a trip to the Sundance Film Festival in 2007. The Pro's choice winner goes to Sundance 2007 as part of the Avid team and has their entry shown throughout the festival. If your entry is one of the top 50 vote getters, you'll receive a free copy of Avid Xpress Pro software. All entries get a 6 month subscription to MovieMaker Magazine.

[via CreativeCow]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

MotionZoneHD: Move It and win a crane

MotionZoneHD, a site for HD stock footage, is sponsoring a contest with the theme "Move It", which pretty much means what you think it means. On Friday, November 10th at 5 P.M. EST, Apple will post a list of three elements that filmmakers will need to incorporate into their final three minute film. Twenty-four hours later, completed entries can be posted to the official web gallery, where they can be publicly viewed and rated. The top 25 highest rated films will then be judged by a panel of experts, with winners in two separate categories taking home a a copy of Final Cut Studio and Shake, and an 80GB iPod. Registration is $125 and you have until October 30th to get your team together and signed up. Once they get 21 teams, that's it. One of the draw backs of this competition is someone in the Philadelphia area has to pick up the "element" and deliver the paper work (check out their MySpace page for a list of Philadelphia volunteers). Best of all everyone who enters will have their film screened twice and a panel of judges and the audience will pick their favorite films. So if you have the time and the people, give this thing a shot.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
