
Lycos is also targeting indie filmmakers to use this platform as a way to reach and interact with tons of viewers in a way they couldn't with traditional media outlets.
Lycos will roll out additional content and features over the next several weeks, including Lycos TV which provides broadcast programming and Lycos Video on Demand which allows viewers to rent or purchase movies. But there is no need to show up unless you're running running IE6 or above and Windows Media Player 10. All content is snuggly wrapped up in Microsoft's DRM technology.

The thing that home entertainment systems can't compete with the cinema on is the shared emotion experience. You can't see other people's reactions but you can feel them, and they enhance your own enjoyment. Comedies are a good example - no-one laughs by themselves but they laugh out loud when lots of other people are laughing as well.
