In Darren Aronofsky's latest film The Fountain he wanted to create a sci-fi flick without using CGI. Aronofsky sought out Peter Parks, a marine biologist who works with his own creation called the microzoom optical bench. Filming various liquids like yeast, baby oil, dyes, and other things mixed into a microliter of water. Who knew curry powder in water when magnified could look like an onslaught of flaming meteorites. "When these images are projected on a big screen, you feel like you're looking at infinity," says Parks. More about this unusually technique and the near-death of The Fountain can be read in this latest Wired article. Boy, Darren is sure out there. Now I really want to see this movie when it comes out on November 22nd.Making a space scene without CGI

1. Hey, what about Werner Herzog's sci-fi movies like The Wild Blue Yonder? He has some pretty creative use of underwater footage and NASA stock footage.
