A lens controller allows you to control the basic functionality of your camcorder without actually laying hands on it. It connects to the LANC or compatible control jack and provides you with simple functions such as zoom and record, plus some units provide more advanced functionality like focus, standby, data-display, etc. The most common place to mount a controller is on the tripod handle, but you can mount it anywhere you need it. This allows you to control the camera without reaching over and around everything to try and find the button on the camcorder. If you use a shoulder mount attachment, you can also attach it on the handle and control things with your thumb.
The zoom function is probably the most used feature on these devices. You will normally find 2 types of zoom mechanisms, rocker and throttle. Some swear that the rocker style is the best to get a smooth zoom. As with most things, it comes down to the manufacturing quality of the device and personal preference. You'll definitely want to play with a few models before purchasing. Popular manufacturers include Bogen/Manfrotto, Varizoom and Bebob. Not all camcorders are created equal, so make sure to get a device that is compatible with your equipment.
I have 2 different Varizoom models, one with only zoom, record and focus controls and one with these plus additional controls available. But I only use the zoom control and the record stop/start button, the other controls are a waste for me. Everybody has different needs and what's important to one person may not be important to someone else. If you are interested in getting a controller, do your research and get some hands-on if possible. I bet once you start using one, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it.
If you already own one, post any tips you have for those looking to purchase their first one.
