Update: 10/11/2006
As per a reader comment (see below) I decided to do some additional checking on this product. It turns out the comment was correct, and this is indeed a new light source for DLP. The article linked below did an extremely poor job of reporting the story. prior to the post, I did check out the manufacturers site and found nothing contradicting the report. I apologize for unintentionally misleading anyone, and will attempt to correct the mistakes below in a new post.
Move over plasma, there's a new set in town. Australian company Arasor debuted today a brand spanking new technology they feel will put Plasma TVs in an early grave. Their sales pitch: half the price - twice as good! They also claim the new sets will be lighter and
Arasor claims their new Optoelectronics (optics + electronics) chip will allow people to see television more like they see the real world. Brighter color, sharper image, and more clarity amount to a technology people already want. Match that with a cost that's roughly half that of plasma, and these babies should sell like hotcakes. watch for a holiday 2007 release.

1. Bah, the source article did a crappy job of reporting the news.
http://www.novalux.com/ (this it the chip the source article refers to)
What we have here is a new light source for rear projection dlp TVs (or dlp front projectors).
Normal 3 chip dlp (or sxrd) TVs use a UHP light source and split it into RGB via prisms, and then onto separate dlp chips. Or worse, a single dlp chip with a colour wheel.
This is just a **new** light source. Using solid state lasers to generate RGB light directly rather than using a prism. The light is of a better quality i suppose. The TVs still need 3 dlp chips to work.
This is competing with rear projection TVs or front projectors ..NOT flat panel technologies like plasmas, lcd, or SEDs. So, its not fair to say that its half the price and i cant see how they can claim this to be thinner than plasmas (it projection based).
