This was briefly mentioned with the announcement of the HVR-H1U but today Sony introduced more details about the HVR-DR60. This lightweight and portable device sports a 1.8 inch 60GB hard drive that connects to your camera via iLink/Firewire/IEEE1394. What I think is neat is the fact that it can start and stop according to when you hit the record button on your camera, preventing unwanted, wasted footage. You can even record hybrid style to both tape and tapeless formats at the same time. If you should happen to drop or experience a power interruption, the DR60, has up to a 14-second buffer for smooth recording. Now this thing is only handy if it has enough juice, which it certainly does if you couple it with the Sony NP-F970 L-series battery for up to 13.5 hours of use. The HVR-DR60 records .m2t files for HDV and .avi files for DVCAM/DV recording which should be compatible with most NLE. Get yours in November when they are expected to ship for about $1800.Sony's new HDV-friendly hard-drive recorder
