If you can't afford one of those high-dollar fluid heads for your tripod, here's a tip to get a smoother pan with the less expensive "fluid type" or just regular pan heads. Attach a rubber band to the handle, then use your finger to pull the rubber band when panning. This will smooth out your pans and also allow you to easily (and smoothly) switch directions if needed. I always keep a few rubber bands around my wrist during a shoot, they're cheap and can be very handy.Tip for smooth panning
