Notice I just use standard folding tables. They are cheap and get the job done. Plus, you can move and rearrange them easily.

I spend the most time at DV Info, but browse through the others pretty often to keep up. The DVX User forum is geared toward the Panasonic DVX users, but don't let that turn you way if you don't have that camera. You'll learn lots of stuff in that forum.

Not a large studio room but its well appointed. What you cant see on the walls behind me is a collection of antique cameras and a rather extensive vinyl and CD music collection in large shelves. This makes it a very nice room to be in. Who would have thought a home-based studio of this small size could produce media across the spectrum - broadcast to the web and mobile devices; video, compositing, 3D, sound and photography. I feel like a one-man army in this room. Makes me very happy to live in the digital age :)

Not very pro looking, I know, but it gets the job done. I use the iMac for editing with FCP 4.5, and CG rendering with Cinema 4D and Vue 5 Infinite (it's in the middle of a render in this photo). I use the Sawtooth G4 (which is networked to the iMac) for archiving and storage of my footage and finished movies. I use the TV as a reference monitor for editing, and also for playing Halo 2. There's also a Panasonic GS-400 that I use for shooting, and sometimes I use a friend's DVX-100A. Those National Geographics are just to prop up the keyboard of the G4, makes it easier to type on both keyboards.

7. Cool Henry! I like the way the laptop and the tv sit out of the way on shelves. But I really like the big mallet on top of the xbox :-) There are days I which I had one.

8. Hi Sheila,

What is black thing haging on the wall that holds your dv tapes? Is that designed specifically for dv tapes? And if it is, does it work well.

Also, it would be cool if you could tell us what u guys & gals are working on.

The storage racks are made by Bryco. They are made of hard plastic and work great! I have three sizes:

My editing station is a Dell XPS Gen 5 PC with Pentium D, dual core extreme edition processor running XP and Adobe Production Studio. I have a dual monitor (Sony 19" 23") setup, plus a JVC production monitor. For audio I use the M-Audio Firewire 410 with BX5a studio monitors.

I also have a second PC which is an old Dell and is painfully slow. I use it for junk stuff like rss feeds, IM, Skype, etc.

is based around a dual cpu AMD64 3gb ram 256mb nVidia 7600 gpu, 3x200gb HDD on RAID0, 2x 300gb external HDD and two 19inch Mitsubishi lcd monitors. The other mahcine is an Acer 8200 dual core 2ghz laptop with 200gb hdd, 2gb ram, 512mb ati x1600 gpu hooked to a second 17 inch lcd. Both chew through HD like butter.

I use an array of sound cards including a Edirol UA1ex, Edirol FA66 and behringer F-Control. An Audigy4 sound card gets used for sourround sound and stereo near field monitoring comes from two Edirol MA20D speakers. A roland PCR 50 midi keyboard is there (although i play terribly) Cameras are Sony PDX10, Sony HDV A1P and TRV50. Until recently my work horse was a Canon XM2 but was recently replaced with the A1P for the shft to HDV.

I use a Behringer BCF control surface for controlling audio mixes in Vegas, Acid and Kinetic and a mini Wacom graphics tablet for digital photo and illustration work. External video monitoring is to a simple Panasonic flat screen TV which works very well without the cost of a broadcast monitor. All audio sources (including Minidisc deck - how old school - midi sound module and mics) come in via Behirnger 12 channel mixer.

Software is a pretty wide spread. Vegas is the hub (although I use Premiere Pro 2 and the Adobe Production Suite as well and love its inter-change between After Effcets, Encore, Photoshop and PP - no other developer comes even half way close to this level of project file exchange) Cinema 4D for 3D, Acid Pro and Soundforge for audio work (as well as Vegas) Kinetic as a soft synth engine. Lots of open source stuff as well - Blender, Celtx, Virtualdub. And of course I couldnt live without my ShuttlePro controller...!

Much of my work is software and hardware reviwing for magazines, journals and a new book I'm working on; academic research and the occasional freelance production (although less of that these days than in the past) I produce a lot of video projects for web delivery and mobile devices - documentary and vidoe art. Major current project is a micro documentary series on cinema itself and the evolution of cinematic space. Shot HDV it'll have lots of 3D and multiplane composiitng work and a surround sound mic. As I said before - the self sufficiency of this studio is very empowering. Not so long ago i would have had to go to other people in 3 different studios to do all those elements. Now I can do it all on my own in the one studio. (maybe I just dont like playing with others...:)

12. Man thats a sexy room. The Plasma/LCD on the wall is the real icing on the cake... But to me it just aint an edit bay without coffee cups, posters, a fair degree of mess and a few dangling cords draped from copious gear, many of which arent used anymore but are lingerign because they look cool... Clean edit bay is the product of an unsound mind :)
