This should make you chuckle. I found an old New York Times article that was published on November 10th, 1996. 10 years ago (gosh it really was 10 years ago, scary) people had large libraries of VHS tapes and electronics companies were touting this new digital video disk. The consensus is the DVD is going to flop. Check out this quote..."After months of relentless hype, followed by some elaborate hedging, the digital video disk has turned out to be the consumer electronics industry's 'vaporware' of the year. And while the little disk that can't continues on its treadmill of uncertainty, new laser disks are popping out at a vigorous rate and looking more than ever like a medium that will be hard to eclipse."Wow! At the end of the article is a list of new movies just being released on the state-of-the-art laserdisc format. Aliens for $59.95. Goldeneye for $44.95. Toy Story for $29.95. But the most horrific realization that came to me after reading this article was what if they were right, and DVDs were a flop? Our movie collections would be much bigger today -- literally!
