Seagate has patented technology that could theoretically increase hard drive capacity ten fold. Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) allows the read/write head to get closer to the surface of the disk thanks to nanotube-based lubrication. This technology can usher in 600GB 1.8 inch drives, 1.46TB 2.5 inch drives, and 7.5TB Barracuda 3.5 inch drives. To put 7.5TB in to perspective you could store about 577 hours of DV video or 1,595 single layer DVDs. It is worth noting Seagate has not given any date as to when we will start to see this technology in real world products. A 7.5 Terabyte hard drive coming soon?
