Year One with HDV

D.W. Leitner (Producer, DP) reports for Digital Content Producer on his first year of using HDV. He covers the range of HDV cameras including Sony's FX1 & Z1U, HVR-A1 and the JVC HD100. Most of his observations revolve around using these cameras on the field and less on the codec side. In particular, Leitner fell in love with the HVR-A1's compact size: "One-third the size of a Z1, it (HVR-A1) managed to retain virtually every feature of the Z1, including DVCAM and DV formats and Shot Transition. One feature left behind was the Z1's prism optics, since the A1 introduced a radically new single-CMOS imaging system with true 1920×1080 resolution." I have to say, I was unawares on how truly small the HVR-A1 is. That tea cup almost looks as big as the camera.
