Panasonic and Sony have announced AVCHD, a new recording format that records HD (1080i and 720P) on to a DVD disc. The new format is meant to simplify HD recording and playback process. The AVCHD uses the MPEG4 codec -- H.264 -- for compressing the HD footage (says a lot about H.264). AVCHD software will be needed to play back content. According to this article, 20 mins of HD video can be recorded at an average quality setting, compared to 30 minutes of video on a Standard definition camcorder using a similar disc. Panasonic has stated that they intend to use the specification to also develop technology to record the format onto SD memory cards. I prefer the SD cards -- less moving parts, easier in post. No announcements were made on when this technology will reach consumers.Sony, Panasonic introduce new recording format
