Reading Adam Wilt's post
on the HD camera shootout, couple of things struck me. These people put a lot of effort into these tests, their
knowledge of digital video far supasses mine. But some things simply struck me as odd. It was not a controlled
environement – too many cooks in the kitchen. It sounded like tasks were not properly assigned in that it seemed
everyone were conducting their own tests. Why were they not provided more resources such as time and place to conduct
all the tests that they would have liked? Why was the DVX with Andromeda not included in these tests? I say that
because basically the JVC, Canon & Sony were recorded to disk (?) and not to tape which is the real-world
situation. I love the DVX100, so I have to admit that I lean favorably towards the HVX among these cameras. I just want to state this to indicate my biases. I expected HVX to simply blow the other cameras out of the water (besides the Cinealta & Varicam) so I was at first a little bummed when it seemed the Canon came out looking like the winner (though Adam actually does not state it). However, resolution tests at some point become useless. The Canon XL1 and the DVX is a great example. I would have bet that XL1 winning many more resolution tests compared to the DVX but my preference (and many others) would still be the DVX. I have never owned this camera but I have always loved using it. And that is why I suggest, as I would imagine Adam will also, to actually test these cameras out yourself. They have provided some raw data, it is still up to you to decide. Barry Green's final analysis is still to come. Will bring more links about all this very soon.
