FresHDV pointed me to this blog posting on Walter Murch which then pointed me to a slew of other articles about the man, his work and his approach. A couple of hours later and a couple of Amazon purchases later, I figured I need to get more people to read this stuff so I do not feel so geeky. Walter Murch is probably one of the greatest editors in cinema (Godfather 1-3, The Conversation, Apocalypse Now, American Grafitti, The English Patient, Cold Mountain) and though his techniques were taught in film school, I did not realize what a great educator he is on sound and editing. Some of thoughts, ideas, theories are simply golden for both editors and directors alike.Check out these articles:

1. His blinking rule changed the way I edit permanently and for the better; and it also made me aware of invisible transactions between people that made me a better more astute filmmaker.
I don't believe in any rules in filmmaking except for Murch's editing rules. Part of that has to be the fact that his interests are so obviously beyond film and editing. I'd rather eat dinner with him for an evening than 99% of all directors knowing I'd come away having learned something amazing.
