If you have been holding your breath waiting for the HD DVD and Blu-ray disk associations to put their differences aside and create a unified standard to avoid another all out format war, it looks like it may be time to throw in the towel. It appears that both Toshiba and Sony have finally decided to give up their ill-fated attempt at unification and focus on producing real world products that will actually help them win the upcoming format battle. Hopes for unification had been fading rapidly over the last few months with both formats getting closer to wide release and tensions between the two growing. Right now it looks like the Blu-ray format is already out to a clear lead with support in the upcoming PS3 and the backing of Dell among many others. But like most new technology it is really to early to call and in the end it will be up to the consumer to decide who will come out on top.
